Doug Capraro of West Winfield recently received recognition as a community volunteer by the New York State Office for the Aging for his service to older adults and others in the community.
Capraro was nominated by the Herkimer County Area Office on Aging for recognition at NYSOFA’s annual Older New Yorkers’ Day celebration.
The virtual celebration premiered Nov. 5 on social media with a video presentation featuring approximately 90 honorees from around the state, along with remarks from state officials.
Capraro has been a volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program since December 2012. He is a dedicated driver for the Retired Individuals Driving Elderly program at Catholic Charities of Herkimer County, assisting hundreds of older adults to their medical appointments, donating 4,356 hours and driving over 135,000 miles over the past eight years.
Capraro has developed close relationships with several clients over the years, and it’s common for clients to request him by name when they call. On a few occasions, he has picked up food and delivered it to clients in need, or personally delivered messages to clients at home when the program could not contact them by phone.
He also assists veterans and other community members who do not have a means of transportation.
