The Waterville Board of Education wrapped up the 2025-26 year with a short meeting.
Board members met in public session for 10 minutes June 23 before going into executive session.
During the public portion Board President Steve Stanton touched on the situation in Cazenovia, where a Cazenovia Board of Education member has been charged with numerous sexual crimes to children.
Stanton said looking at what is going on there raises the question of whether background checks should be done on elected Board members.
Travis Longo resigned from the Cazenovia BOE after the Board tried twice unsuccessfully to have him removed.
“It’s fair to consider this,’’ Stanton said. “That is the only policy we could look at to tighten things up.’’
Board members said the idea is worth exploring as to what would be sought in a background check and how often they should be done.
One sticking point is what course of action a Board could take if something is found.
Board members also approved contract agreements with Transportation Supervisor Ethan Ostrander, Assistant Treasurer Jessie Treen, School Business Executive Cynthia Amarosa and Director of Special Programs Kathleen Hansen.
The retirement request of Bus Driver Wayne Wehrle was approved.
