WCS Project Work Starts

Work has begun on the latest Capital Project at Waterville Central School District.

The project approved by voters addresses a number of needed improvements on school grounds.

These include adding air conditioning at Memorial Park School, redesigning the student drop-off/pick up circle at MPS and fixing water drainage problems with the grass athletic fields at the Junior-Senior High.

WCS Superintendent Zach Abbe said the third through sixth grade wing of the Elementary School is blocked off as rooms are being cleared to begin work.

The Summer program and orientation weeks for incoming kindergartners and Pre-K students are in other areas of the school.

“We’ve made in known it’s vital to have the drop-off open for the first day of school,’’ Abbe said.

Also at the Junior-Senior High repairs are being made to the gym floor to give it a new surface.

Last week’s Board of Education meeting began with a public hearing on the District’s Safety Plan for responses in case of emergencies.

Added from last year’s plan is what to do in case of cardiac medical emergencies.

The regular meeting then opened as the first for the Board’s 2026-27 year.

Steve Stanton was re-elected president unanimously and Dan Nichols was elected vice president.

Annual appointments and designations were approved.

During the regular meeting Abbe gave an update on the possibility for WCS and Brookfield Central School to combine soccer programs this Fall.

Abbe said Waterville if open to whatever combination works best, with the possibility of having enough players to form a junior varsity team.

“We could have proper developement working up to the varsity level,’’ he said, which would smooth the transition players now make from modified to varsity.

He said the potential to combine for a girls varsity seems promising.

Brookfield Board of Education members planned to decide at their meeting this week their Fall sports direction, with the promise of providing transportation for players to Waterville practices and games.

Abbe said the direction schools are taking for sports is to find ways to partner to provide opportunities for students.

BCS girls have been invited to take part in the WCS summer development soccer training going on.

The following people were hired: Emily Wright, MPS Special Education teacher; Brittany Wilcox, MPS Special Education teacher; Erika von Schiller-Deep, Junior-Senior High School Counseling and Guidance; Brittany Nowak, Junior-Senior High English; Amanda Ford, MPS Visual Art; Emily Morris, MPS Literacy; ...
