A construction accident in North Carolina resulted in the death of a former North Brookfield man.
Austin Furner, 26, was operation an amphibious excavator on an island in the Cape Fear River the morning of Monday, Aug. 19.
He died when the excavator turned over, landing deep in the river, becoming submerged.
Furner and his family - his wife, the former Annika Hill of Waterville - and their three sons lived in Carolina Beach.
Furner graduated from Waterville Central School, having played four years on the boys varsity soccer team.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corp after graduation.
Furner had worked for Rigid Constructors since May.
A GoFundMe page set up for his family has taken in numerous donations to help Annika and the boys.
Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Church, Waterville, followed by a gathering at the American Legion in Sangerfield.
Furner is the son of Mike Furner of North Brookfield and Barb Hill.
