Entering the 2023-24 school year the student population at Waterville Central School mirrors where it was at this time last year.
WCS Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Spring told the Board of Education last week that as of that day, 708 students are enrolled in the district. In mid-August last year the district had 708 students, with 50 more students enrolling after that.
Waterville has 19 students coming from out of the district, including four from the Brookfield and one from the Madison districts. Last year 22 non-district students attended WCS.
The entering kindergarten students, the Class of 2041, has an enrollment of 44. Board members discussed trying to get some of the families of the 52 homeschooled students to consider attending WCS.
Spring said before the pandemic the homeschoolers were around 30, followed by a high of 64 in 2020-21. She said reaching out to the families did encourage some to enroll back at WCS.
