Before the Waterville Central School Board begins its search for the next superintendent, it will decide how that search will look.
Oneida-Herkimer- Madison BOCES Superintendent Dr. Patricia Kilburn attended last week’s BOE meeting via Zoom. She outlined the three options for conducting the search:
1) The Board conducts the search on its own. This is mostly done, Kilburn said, when there’s an obvious internal candidate.
2) The Board can hire a private consulting firm to conduct the search.
3) The Board can use Kilburn to direct the search. There is no charge for this,
she said, other than costs for marketing and advertising.
Board members will be looking for someone to replace Dr. Jennifer Spring, who is retiring as superintendent in June. She’s led the District since January 2021.
Kilburn explained her timetable if chosen.
The search would take about six months and require Board members to have seven or eight meetings to review materials, applications and first and second round interview results.
Kilburn would collect input from students, staff, parents and the community.
Often applicants are given a task to explain their approach; she said one district used the issue of a mascot change to see how applicants would handle it.
Board members would see all applications, even ones submitted from people not qualified for the position.
Kilburn would conduct phone interviews with each applicant and provide summaries to the Board.
She said during a search it’s common for applicants to drop out as they might be involved in other searches.
Board members will also decide whether to conduct an open or confidential search.
A confidential search would keep all names of applicants private until someone is hired.
An open search would let people know who the two or three finalists are. ...
