The Times Editorial: Jack Nester

The Clinton Fire Department wrote the following tribute to Jack Nester of Clinton, who died last week. With their permission, we’re using it here to acknowledge the impact Jack had on the fire department and Clinton community.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Past Chief John “Jack” Nester, Sr.

Jack served the Clinton Fire Department after joining the Hose Company in 1956.

For over 67 years, Jack dedicated his life not only to the betterment of CFD, but to the betterment of the entire fire service in Oneida County.

Jack served as Chief of CFD for six years, from 1977-1983. Jack oversaw the purchase and delivery of our 1982 Seagrave engine still in service as active reserve.

During his tenure as Chief, Jack commanded several notable fires including the Alexander Hamilton Inn fire of 1977 and the Jolly Butcher fire of 1979.

In Oneida County, Jack served as County Coordinator Car 271 for several years and as President of the Oneida County Fire Chief’s Association where he contributed to the Arson Task Force.

His career is full of countless service awards, accomplishments, and distinguishments.

Jack’s name is, and will always be, synonymous with passionate involvement in the volunteer fire service. A true “giant” of the fire service, he will be remembered by all as steadfast in his beliefs.

Jack’s ideas were always rooted in what he felt was right for our fire departments.

To us, though, Jack will be remembered as more than a Chief. He was more than a County Coordinator. He was more than a mentor. He was more than a father.

Jack was the true embodiment of what it means to be a volunteer firefighter, selflessly serving our communities.

“At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished... it’s about who you’ve lifted up. Who you’ve made better. It's about what you've given back."
