The Village of Oriskany Falls and Oriskany Falls Fire Department are looking at ways to extend the life of the fire truck that is stationed in Knoxboro.
At the May meeting of the Oriskany Falls Village Board, Fire Commissioners Dale Petrie and Jim Dowd attended to go over the condition of the truck.
Two inspections of the vehicle were done by Tracey Road Body Shop.
The first inspection covered just the frame and reported the vehicle was fine.
The commissioners said the mechanic didn’t take note of underneath the truck.
Dowd and Petrie explained they knew there were problems and took it back to Tracey for a second look of the whole truck.
The second inspection also included photos, which were reviewed at the meeting.
Petrie and Dowd pointed to the photos that showed the frame splitting near the rear tires, which take the greatest weight of the tanker.
The fire department has proposed taking the body of the truck and placing it on a new chassis and cab.
The cost of that is around $300,000 compared to $800,000 for a new truck.
A chassis will take two years to arrive, while a truck could take a year or longer.
The truck is in Fire Station 2 in Knoxboro.
Petrie and Dowd explained that the vehicle can be run with two people as an initial attack truck.
The pumper in the Oriskany Falls station is a five-person vehicle.
