RS Herb Garden Marks 50 Years

The Garden Club of Richfield Springs announced the anniversary and celebration of the 50th year of the Bicentennial Herb Garden at the library in Richfield Springs.

The Garden began as the founding members worked to establish the garden: Mary Sadlon, Marge Estigo, Helen Pratt, Joanne Kinville, Ruth Neuschel, Kathryn Soucy, Gwen Kingsland, Mary Margaret Jordan and Rose Masters.

The original design included medicinal, perfume, cooking herbs and teas.

Today we have 85% herbs and 15% pollinators.

The garden is 30 x 42 feet on the village library property and is worked on today by Garden Club members who each take turns in a section.

The original garden had roses from the Hrinda property, some of which are still living.

A dedication was conducted with the installation of plaques.

The Garden Club of Richfield Springs next meeting will be Sept. 17 at the Richfield Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting is open to the public with speaker Roseanne Loparco, Master Gardener from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, who will speak at 7 p.m. on “Putting your Garden to Bed.”
