No Girls Basketball For Varsity Players At WCS

Waterville High School will not have a girls basketball team at the varsity or junior varsity level this year.
WCS Superintendent Zach Abbe gave an update on winter sports at last week’s WCS Board of Education meeting.
He said due to lack of girls signed up to play this year, there are not enough players for either team.
Only five girls said they would play this year.
The District is looking at options to see if a couple of the girls can play elsewhere.
Abbe said it is expected that there will be enough seventh and eighth grade girls to have two modified teams this year to begin to build the program back.
Waterville, then playing as the Indians, won the last of their Section Three titles in 2022.
They lost in the regional game after winning 21 games. After that Waterville struggled to find wins and players, eliminating the junior varsity team and still sometimes suiting up six or seven varsity players.
Larry Stockwell, coach of the program since 1986, has tallied 546 wins, just 40 away from the all-time coaching wins for Section Three.
Board members discussed the pros and cons of combining with other schools. Doing so can change the Section Three Class a team plays in.
At the start of the meeting, recognition was given to Board members during School Board Members week.
The High School Student Council and the Waterville Teachers Association presented Board members with gifts.
