This spring Mount Markham High School students stepped out of the classroom to improve the local environment.
Earth Day was observed as Mrs. Raymond, Mrs. Martin and 18 students from Intro to Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources, and Environmental Science classes along with the Envirothon team worked with Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Town of Bridgewater in a stream cleanup.
Students walked a stream from behind the Bridgewater Firehouse to behind Patty's Pub.
While walking, students picked up trash and debris that was in the stream that was causing flooding.
Materials removed included tires, plastic, cans and metal scraps all within the stream and along the bank.
Students then learned about the plan to relocate the stream to help prevent additional flooding to landowners.
Students also met Mary Pratt, Oneida County Legislator, who was there showing her support for this project.
Arbor Day was celebrated at the High School with the planting of two sugar maples. The planting of the 3-4" diameter trees was made possible through a grant from the Urban Forestry Tree Council.
Students in various Agriculture classes had the opportunity throughout the week to prepare the site for planting with equipment donated by Clinton Tractor.
The trees were delivered by Terry Hawkridge of Rustic Pines and the Urban Forestry Tree Council.
Mr. Hawkridge and Jessica Pyrda of Oneida County Soil and Water assisted students with planting of the trees.
Under the guidance of Terry Hawkridge, Jessica Pyrda, and Dan Welch of NYS DEC students from the Elementary School and the West Winfield Garden Club mulched the trees.
