MM Middle School Curriculum Examined

Mount Markham Middle School teachers are examining the curriculum offered to look for improvements.

Middle School Principal Sean Carone reviewed the process underway at last week’s MM Board of Education meeting.

The meeting opened with a public hearing on using up to $60,000 from the Building Repair Reserve fund to buy and install two hot water heaters.

No one spoke during the hearing and the Board will vote on the matter at their Dec. 16 meeting.

Carone said the curriculum examination began in September.

Teachers began with the task of explaining how to use a turn signal while driving to someone who didn’t drive, he said.

With that mindset teachers began prioritizing the curriculum and looking at standards.

From there discussions are taking place on the top three to five priorities for each department.

Carone said increasing critical thinking skills for students is one of the goals for the adjustment.

Another goal is to increase Professional Development opportunities for Middle School teachers.

Sixth grade teachers attended a conference that focused on the Science of Reading, he said.

Teachers have also begun looking at the schedule for 2026-27, Carone said, specifically section loads where classes can be added.

Carone also showed the Board state assessment test results looking at students getting a 2 or higher grade.

Results in English and Math have increased all three years, and science is almost at 100 percent at that level.
