Kirkland Trails Receives Grant For Village Route
The Village of Clinton was awarded an $840,000 grant to develop a half-mile Village Extension Trail connecting the Village center to the 2-mile Kirkland North Section Trail under development.
This was part of Gov. Kathy Hochul announcement of awards for the federal Transportation Alternative Program grants administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
Kirkland Trails assisted in planning the trail route and preparing the grant application.
They will continue to work with the Village to oversee the project and raise the requisite grant’s 20% local match of $210,000.
In a few years when the Kirkland North Section and Village Extension trails are complete, the community will have a continuous multi-use trail extending from Kirkland Avenue across from Clinton Schools north up to NYS Route 5 by Limberlost Road.
This will complement the existing 3-mile Kirkland South Section Trail, already enjoyed by hikers, walkers and bikers.
The goal is to connect all these trails to form one trail, linking communities from Oriskany Falls to Clark Mills and then to Rome.
The Village Extension Trail will become a valuable asset for the area.
It will provide a safe, universally accessible destination for recreation, exercise, nature watching, and a pedestrian trail for Clinton students.
In addition, it will facilitate the use of non-motorized modes of travel to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
