‘Godspell’ Done Pandemic Style


Perhaps the message conveyed by the Clinton High School Music Department’s production of ‘Godspell’ rings true 2,000 years after the time period of the musical.


Shown to a limited audience in the Clinton Performing Arts Theatre and livestreamed for those three nights to people who bought tickets, the cast took on the musical that tells short stories based on the Gospel of Matthew. On Broadway, starting in the early 1970s, ‘Godspell’ won a Tony for its musical score.


High standards for a High School group putting on a musical without the usual months of rehearsal. And doing it with the Covid-19 restriction of wearing a mask the entire time on stage.


But when the cast launched into the musical’s signature song, ‘Day by Day’ - which could have been the national motto for the last 14 ...
