Players on the Waterville varsity football team hold a banner they received last Friday night from the New York State School Boards Association.
The award recognizes the care and thoughtfulness shown by the team to Ryan of DeRuyter, also holding the banner. The players and Ryan met at Applebee’s in North Utica this summer and the team sang Happy Birthday to him and invited Ryan to join them.
A $50 contribution made by a couple at the restaurant toward the team’s bill was passed on by the Eagles to their waitress.
Bill Miller of West Winfield, a member of NYSSBA, made the presentation, saying the act of kindness showed the character of the boys on the team.
Ryan was invited to join the team on the sideline for the game Friday night. The Eagles rallied in the final minute to win.
