Brookfield Superintendent Learning About District

Brookfield Central School’s new superintendent said his first days on the job have been made easier by the welcome and support shown.

Dr. Tom Butler attended his first BCS Board of Education meeting last week.

He thanked Maintenance Supervisor Ken Plows for a tour and explaining the building project.

The half-hour public portion of the meeting began after Butler and Board members met in executive session for the first 20 minutes.

Butler reviewed the District’s 2026-27 Safety Plan, which he said includes Prevention, Response and Recovery.

School climate and building security are addressed in the state mandated plan. Brookfield will be upgrading its entryway security this year.

Butler thanked Ron Wheelock, who served as interim superintendent for most of last year, for his efforts to help Butler transition to the new role.

Also in the safety plan are drills and training and protocols for emergency situations.

Six years ago a new category, Communicable Disease Plan, was added.

Board President Valerie Nolan said a Meet and Greet for staff and Butler is scheduled.

The community will be able to meet him at the Back to School Open House.

She mentioned a recent community meeting where good feedback on the importance of the school was shared.

Business Manager Tiffany Lopesz reviewed the tax warrant, which covers three counties and six towns. Lopesz said a bill from BOCES will wrap up expenses for the 2025-26 year once it arrives.

So far 82 percent, or $6.7 million, of the $8.3 budget has been spent. Four BCS girls will play on the Waterville varsity soccer team.

Brookfield will provide transportation to Waterville for practices.

Nolan said rides home will be arranged through parents and the school.
