Brookfield Chooses New Superintendent


When Tom and Kim Butler began searching for the ideal property for a second home, they knew what they wanted.


Both grew up on dairy farms; Tom in Elkland, Pa. just over the New York border south of Corning, and Kim in western Pennsylvania.


Their educational careers kept them busy.


Tom taught Social Studies and Kim is a Science teacher.


Over the years, the Butlers, along with their two daughters and son, sought a quiet getaway.


Ideally, the nearest neighbors would be far enough away to give them plenty of land for all-season activities.


They found the right place in the Town of Brookfield on Skaneateles Turnpike.


And although this past winter was rough in their unheated camp, the Butlers enjoyed the peace and quiet found there.


Now that second home becomes their main home, or will once they expand to a full- season heated house.


Last week the Brookfield Board of Education approved a contract agreement with Dr. Thomas Butler to become BCS’s new superintendent.


BCS Board President Valerie Nolan said at the special Board meeting last week that an exceptional leader has been found to lead the District.


Butler has focused his career and research on rural districts like Brookfield.


Nolan reviewed the search, which began last Fall and included appointed Ron Wheelock as interim superintendent. He will stay until Butler begins his new role Aug. 1.


BCS Board members worked with Oneida- Herkimer-Madison BOCES Superintendent Dr. Patricia Kilburn on the search.


Thirteen people were initially interviewed out of 16 applications.
