Ten years ago Neil and Jeanne-Marie Case of West Winfield received a phone call.
Jake Rasbach of The Lanterns wanted to know if the Cases would take over an event at his place to raise money for the American Heart Association.
The Cases said yes and for the last 10 first Saturdays in February, have run the Cardboard Classics Race at The Lanterns to raise money for the AHA.
This year’s event is Saturday, Feb. 7.
Registration is from noon to 1 p.m. and races start at 1.
Food and drink will also be available to purchase.
The cause is dear to them as their son, Joshman, who recently turned 18, had his open-heart surgery as a baby at 9 months.
Money raised goes to Team Joshman for the AHA’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk in March, a month after the sled races.
The Cases have been participating in the Run and Walk since before Joshman could walk it himself.
In 2009 Joshman was a Red Cap Ambassador for the Mohawk Valley event.
Prior to Covid about 100 people participated on Team Joshman.
That community spirit all begins with the cardboard sled races.
