Search Continues For A New Superintendent

The search for Waterville Central School District’s next superintendent remains ongoing.

WCS Board of Education President Steve Stanton said at last week’s BOE meeting that the board wants to make the best thoughtful decision for the school. “We’re looking at everything we’ve done so far and the feedback to decide what we do next,’’ he said.

Stanton said the board deliberately started the process last fall to find a replacement for Superintendent Chuck Chafee, who is retiring in June. “We set a long timeline,’’ he said. “At no time have we rushed it and we continue to be careful as we go forward.’’

A finalist candidate, Joe Muller, was brought in for a day to meet the WCS community. Some concerns about Muller, who is assistant superintendent in the Whitesboro district, were brought up because his professional background lacks teaching and academic experience.

Stanton said board members still want feedback on their thoughts for the next district leader. He also requested that giving feedback, or any communication with board members, be made easier by putting each member’s district email on the district website. Previously people had to email Board clerk Kim Fancett to reach a board member.

In discussion about the 2020-21 budget, Business administrator Tracy Leone said the district no longer faces having to reduce its tax levy. Instead, the tax cap calculations show Waterville can increase the tax levy 2.34 percent, or about $124,000.

Chafee said that is a much better situation than the negative...
