Brookfield boys basketball pulled off an upset at Hamilton in overtime, advancing in the Class D playoffs.
The Beavers won 55-51 after the Emerald Knights used a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game and add the extra period. Earlier in the season Brookfield beat Hamilton 72-64 after losing their first matchup by two points.
The Beavers enjoyed an almost home-court advantage at Hamilton with a good crowd of orange-clad fans in attendance.
Kodie Abrams led BCS with 22 points and Preston Crespo scored 13. Caleb Worden had 7 to go with a strong night on defense, and Derek Winfield scored 6, Kaden Ondrako 5 and Jonah Rogers 2.
Hamilton led 14-11 after one quarter and Brookfield took a 26-21 halftime lead. The Beavers led 40-34 going into the fourth quarter.
Brookfield moves on to play at No. 5 Copenhagen Wednesday, Feb. 26. That game is the second of a doubleheader that starts with the Copenhagen girls playing Madison.
The winner Wednesday moves on to the semifinal game Saturday, Feb. 29 at 12:45 p.m. at Onondaga Community College. The other opponent will either be top seed DeRuyter or No. 8 Oriskany.
Brookfield girls
While other teams opened the Section Three playoffs last week, Brookfield girls earned a bye as the Class D’s No. 1 seed of the 13 teams that qualified.
Brookfield, 20-0, will play Sandy Creek, which beat New York Mills 71-60 in the first round. The Beavers have a home game Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
The winner moves on to the first of two semifinals at Onondaga Community College with an 11:30 game Sunday morning March 1. The second semifinal game follows, with the two winners meeting back at OCC Saturday, March 7 at 3 p.m. for the Class D title.
Whoever wins the sectional title will make a third trip to OCC for the regional matchup with the Section Ten winner. That game is set for Saturday, March 14 at 3:45 p.m.
Advancing out of that round puts the winner in the state’s Final Four at Hudson Valley Community College March 20 and 21. The semifinals are set for Friday, March 20 at 1:30 and 3:15 p.m.
The girls Class D state title will be decided Saturday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
Brookfield, ranked No. 3 in the state in last week’s poll, is the only team in that Top 20 with 20 wins and undefeated.
Madison boys
Class D No. 11 seed Madison lost at No. 6 seed Faith Heritage 84-73.
Although only four players scored for FH, one had 48 points and the other 30 points.
Eamonn Shields led Madison with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Ethan Rivers scored 12, Jake Vedder 11, Jake Neidhart 10, Hudson Idzi 7, Reese Snyder 6 and Gavin Helmke 2. Neidhart also had 15 rebounds for Madison, which ends the season 11-10.
Madison girls
No. 6 seed Madison beat No. 11 Lafargeville 68-50 in the first round of Class D.
Madison moves on to travel to No. 3 Copenhagen Wednesday. Copenhagen is 18-2.
Madison broke a close game open in the second quarter by outscoring the visitors 22-13 to take a 10-point halftime lead.
Maryellen Coleman led the Blue Devils with a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds. Lyncoln Belden and Jordan Mayne both scored 13 points.
Christa Usborne scored 9, Lydia Pisiak 7, Miranda Putnam 5 and Sarah McLain and Brianna Usborne 2 each. Christa Usborne also had 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
