Behind every high scorer is a point guard willing to pass up a shot for a better one. Waterville point guard Megan Wittenbeck assisted her teammates on six baskets in Saturday’s 55-37 win over Little Falls that put the Indians at 7-3 halfway through the season. The win also puts Coach Larry Stockwell four away from reaching 500 career wins. Wittenbeck’s first assist went to Laney Hinman about midway through the first quarter during a 12-0 Indians start. Hinman showed no effects of missing a couple of games out sick, scoring five seconds into the game and tallying 9 of the Indians’ 15 first-quarter points on her way to a double-double day of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Wittenbeck also assisted in the first quarter on a bucket by Eleonore Collins that gave Waterville a 15-4 lead going into the second quarter. Paige Cornish earned her own assist by passing to Wittenbeck for a layup. Sydney Hajdasz drove in for a banked in shot to kick off the second quarter. Freshman Natalee Collins put together a double-double also, fueled by six points in the second quarter as part of her 10-point, 14-rebound game. Her rebounds bring her over 100 for the season. Collins also had a big block - her first of three - of a Mounties shot that brought cheers from the Indians fans at Jim Van Wormer Gym that helped put Waterville up 25-13 at the half.
