Late in the first half, Brookfield senior Jonah Rogers moved to shoot, but found the way blocked by two DeRuyter defenders.
Rogers instead flipped a side pass to teammate Kodie Abrams, who hit a long bucket that cut the Beavers gap to 11 points, 39-28. But those were just two of nine points the BCS boys varsity team had in the second quarter as visiting DeRuyter scored 27 points for a 46-28 halftime lead.
The Rockets hung nearly 100 points on Brookfield to win 95-67 in the CCL matchup. The Beavers dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Through the opening quarter and much of the second the game played out closely, with four ties and only a basket separating the teams at times. That turned after the last tie, 23-23, when DeRuyter shut down the Brookfield offense for four minutes and went on a 14-0 run.
DeRuyter actually got off to a great start with a lead before the game clocked ticked off any time. Brookfield was assessed a technical foul for taunting during the warmups and the Rockets opened with a free throw, followed by two baskets once time started.
Derrick Winfield’s 3-pointer put the Beavers on the board and then he followed with a nice offensive rebound. Not until the first of Kaden Ondrako’s four 3-pointers did Brookfield take the lead, 8-7, and regained it with his second in a row, 11-9.
Preston Crespo hit two free throws and Abrams, who scored 25 points in the game, started off with a dribble drive bucket to make it 15-11.
