Playoff Games Begin

After successful fall seasons in league competition, boys and girls soccer, football and field hockey from Clinton and Waterville open up quests to win a Section Three title this week.

By going undefeated, the Waterville girls soccer team earned the No. 1 spot in Class C. After a bye in the first round, the Indians open play at home Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. the winner of Watertown IHC/Pulaski.

A win Thursday propels Waterville into the semifinal round in Lowville Wednesday, Oct. 30. The winner of that game plays Friday, Nov. 1 at SUNY Cortland at 7:30 p.m. for the Section Three title.

Clinton girls are the No. 4 team in Class B and host No. 13 Camden at 3 p.m. Wednesday. If Clinton wins they play a second game at home Thursday vs. the Holland Patent (No. 5)/Skaneateles (No. 12) winner.

The winner of the Thursday game heads to the semifinals Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Jamesville-Dewitt for a 5:30 game. The winner plays Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at SUNY Cortland for the Section Three title.

In Class D, Brookfield qualified as the No. 15 seed and plays at No. 2 Fabius-Pompey Tuesday. No. 14 Madison travels to No. 3 Copenhagen Tuesday.

In boys soccer, the Warriors earned the No. 2 spot in Class B despite having handed No. 1 General Brown its only loss of the year. Clinton entertains Mount Markham at 3 p.m. Tuesday; the next round is set for Friday at sites to be announced.

Waterville boys are the No. 6 seed in Class C and host No. 11 Beaver River Wednesday night at 6. A win will give the Indians a game Friday or Saturday either home or at a higher seed.

In football action, Waterville earned the No. 3 seed in Class D after finishing in a four-way tie for first place. The Indians host No. 6 Sauquoit Valley (2-5) at 7 p.m. Friday; in their regular season game Waterville won 7-6.

Clinton qualified for their first football playoffs in almost a quarter-century as the No. 4 seed in Class C. The Warriors (5-2) will host No. 5 Herkimer at noon Saturday. They did not play during the regular season.

In field hockey playoffs Clinton tries to make it four trips to the final game in a row. The Warriors earned a first-round by and will head to VVS Sunday for a 5 p.m. game vs. either VVS or Canastota.

The winner of the second-round game heads to the Class C final set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sauquoit Valley. The other side of the bracket will be either No. 1 seed Camden or the winner of the Mount Markham/Cazenovia game.
