
After lost their first game of the season just hoursafter being chosen the No. 1 team in the state, the Clinton girls varsity soccer team headed to Marcellus Saturday to prove they belonged at the top.
That came with the extra burden of having lost earlier in the week to Central Valley, which had entered the rankings at No. 19. The Warriors bounced back with a win over No. 9 Marcellus to improve to 10-1-1.
Gwen Williams scored in the game’s first 5 minutes with a blast that stretched the back of the net. Although the warm fall day quickly chilled as the sun went down, the Warriors stayed hot throughout the game, fending off the Mustangs again and again.
On the turf the ball moved fast, but the Clinton defense of Mia Lopata, Alexis Highers and Riley Jones beat the home team to the ball. And when they couldn’t, stellar goalie Kaitlyn Williams was there for the stop in her sixth shutout.
