Waterville High School technology teacher Steve English took a couple of deep breaths and tried to say the last line of his talk to the WCS Class of 2018 without crying.
His commencement address to the 57 graduates already had brought tears, and some laughs, to them and their families and friends and faculty who sat in the school auditorium. After that emotional roller coaster, he wrapped up with: “Always remember that Mr. English loves you.’’
And then, the graduates said I love you back, as they all left their seats and enveloped English and each other in a group hug.
The love was evident throughout Waterville’s 144th commencement that came on a beautiful Saturday morning. The ceremony reflected what many said of this graduating class as a caring and supportive group of young people.
