Unsafe Buildings Addressed

The Town of Kirkland Board met Monday evening to discuss new business.


The Board approved a resolution to open the public hearing to discuss Local Law 1 of 2025: Override of the Tax Levy Limit.


No members of the public spoke for the hearing.


A member of the public spoke with the Board about raising $50,000 for upgrades to the Clark Mills Fire Department's equipment and systems in response to the June 22 tornado.


The Department received a quote for the installation of a backup generator for $19,200 and asked the Town of Kirkland to underwrite the expense.


A member of the public met with the Board to request the Town pay a third of the Clinton Fire Department's firehouse feasibility study.


Town of Kirkland Supervisor Bob Meelan said the request for the study is from the Village, and the Town is concerned with paying for a feasibility study for something it doesn't own.


The Board held a discussion about the Fire Department's options for a potential relocation.


Sandy Schofield asked the Board to attend the next Clinton Kirkland Improvement Corporation Community Conversation, Sept. 17.


The Board held a discussion regarding a condemned residence. Town of Kirkland Attorney Tony Hallak said, "The steps needed to be taken to save the property have not been taken. We are prepared to put it on the record those buildings are unsafe."


Codes Officer Bob Harris said, "A request for demolition is submitted. Two of the buildings are in horrendous condition. Building 1 is collapsing further, and they can't be replaced in a flood plain."


Hallak told the property owners they had two weeks to provide a flood plain report from their engineer to Harris at the next Town of Kirkland Board meeting.


The Board approved a resolution approving the Aug. 25 meeting minutes.
