Mustangs Beat Solvay 74-55

The Mount Markham boys varsity basketball team defeated Solvay 74-55 in the Class B Sectional Quarterfinals at home Wednesday night.


The 20-2 Mustangs advanced to the semifinals, where they played Skaneateles Tuesday night at Phoenix High School.


The winner moves on to the Section Three Class B championship game Sunday, March 8 at Onondaga Community College at 6:15 p.m. to play either Marcellus or Lowville.


Against Solvay, MM won the opening jump ball before a traveling violation gave Solvay their first possession.


Matt Lunny grabbed a defensive rebound and made a layup for a the first score of the game.


A SCS turnover out of bounds led to Caden Walker assisting Lunny on a three.


Blake Grower grabbed a steal and Evan Kocienda grabbed an offensive rebound before a MM turnover out of bounds.


SCS made a three and grabbed a steal for a turnover out of bounds.


SCS grabbed a steal for a layup to tie the game at 5-5.


An offensive rebound by Owen Jones led to a SCS defensive rebound for a three. Jones assisted Lunny on a three to tie the game at 8-8.


Lunny grabbed a defensive rebound before SCS grabbed a defensive rebound for a layup. Walker assisted Kocienda on a layup to the the game at 10-10.


Walker grabbed a defensive rebound, leading to Jones making a free throw.


SCS made a three before Jones assisted Walker on a layup to tie the game at 13-13.


Lunny grabbed a steal for a layup and MM called timeout with 1:41 to play in the first quarter leading 15-13. SCS made a jumper to tie the game at 15-15.


Walker assisted Lunny on a layup to give MM a 17-15 lead. Kocienda grabbed a steal before making two free throws.
