The Town of Kirkland Board met Wednesday evening to discuss new business.
Chip Bassett, president of Kirkland Trails, announced that the group received a grant from New York state for $1.5 million to expand the trail north of Clinton and into Kirkland toward Clark Mills.
The project is in partnership with the Town of Kirkland.
Bassett said there would be a trailhead at the church on Kirkland Avenue near the Clinton Arena.
The trail will head north and end at the intersection of Route 5 and Limberlost Road, where there would be another trailhead.
Bassett said the pedestrian bridge that did not get funded by the community’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant will be paid for in this grant.
Timetable is to have the trail done by the end of 2026. Total cost of the project is almost $1.9 million.
The longterm plan is the have the Kirkland trails connect with the state’s Erie Canal Trail.
