HCCC Bowlers Qualify To Play For National Titles

The Herkimer County Community College men’s and women’s bowling teams competed at the National Championship in Michigan earlier this month.

Coach Tony DeLuca’s teams of David Cook (Little Falls), Sophie Hyde (Mohawk), Sianna Kenyon (Ilion), Abigail Maurelli (Morris), Michael Carlson (Barneveld), and Chris Hardin (Rome) competed in the NJCAA Bowling Championship in Lansing, Mich.

In his six years of coaching, DeLuca has had his teams qualify every year for the national tournament.

Students competed in both doubles and singles events. HCCc was one of 22 teams from seven states and a total of 132 bowlers.

Cook placed 12th overall in men’s singles. He rolled a 636 series with a 212 average.

Herkimer traveled to the event by sharing a bus with local community colleges Mohawk Valley, Fulton-Montgomery, and Schenectady. They all qualified to represent Region III and were among eight teams from New York state.

This season the HCCC women won the Region III championship, while the men finished fifth.
