District, Board Explain What Happened With Overdose

The Mount Markham Central School Board of Education met Tuesday night to discuss new business.


The Board held a lengthy discussion about an incident that occurred at a Modified Basketball game March 6.


Students discovered an unconscious person in a bathroom stall. Site personnel determined the man overdosed on narcotics.


Plainclothes Police and New York State Troopers in attendance secured the scene while Narcan was administered and EMS services called.


Members of the Board expressed anger about the incident and the Board chose to withhold releasing an official statement.


Mt. Markham Superintendent Joe D'Apice said the person has been banned from school grounds and the Board asked D'Apice to keep them updated as the situation develops.


Other areas during the lengthy meeting focused on the 2024-25 budget.


BOCES District Superintendent D.J. Shepardson and BOCES Business Manager Steve Coupe talked to the Board about the 2024-25 Proposed Administrative Budget and Capital Budget.


Shepardson showed the total BOCES Administrative Budget for the last two years and the proposed 2024-25 Budget, the BOCES Superintendent budget, and the District Superintendents Budget, Central Administration Budget and the Business Administration Budgets.


Coupe explained how BOCES Transfer Charges are processed.


Building and Grounds Supervisor Keith Williams gave an update to the Board about the District’s Building and Grounds Budget, which is increasing $45,000 to $772,500.


Transportation Supervisor Brian Mattison gave a presentation on the Transportation budget. The Transportation budget is increasing $209,776 to $2,136,976.


Custodial Supervisor Christopher Haar presented the Custodial budget. The Custodial budget is increasing $156,421 to $1,419,000.


D'Apice said, "I'm very grateful to have all three of these guys with us. They show pride and passion in their service."


The Board approved a resolution accepting the March 12 meeting minutes.

The Board approved a resolution accepting the January District Treasurer's Report and intrafund transfers.


The Board approved a resolution establishing an extra classroom Treasurer's account for the High School Spanish Club.


The Board approved a resolution appointing Tori Roberts to the co-curricular position of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club Advisor.


The Board approved a resolution appointing Candace Goodenough to the position of Regular Bus Driver. ...
