Board Addresses Codes Matters

The Village of West Winfield Board met Monday evening to discuss new business.


The Board approved a resolution authorizing the payment of vouchers. The Board approved a resolution accepting the June 12 meeting minutes. The Board approved a resolution accepting the Treasurer's Report.


Owners of a residence on South Street met with the Board to discuss their opposition to the ordinance obligating landlords to have their apartments inspected after each tenant leaves and for putting the responsibility to pay for the inspections on landlords. The residents said the Village was overstepping their authority and questioned the liabilities of the inspection policy.


Board members said there are properties in the Village that aren't safe and the village can't single out specific landowners to be able to enforce the safety regulations needed on the unsafe properties.


A resident of the Village asked the Board about compiling a Codes Committee to review Village Codes. They then brought it to the Board's attention that a neighboring property's burning of screen waste smoke was inconveniencing her.


Board member Jim Murphy said "If a neighbor is burning something and you're bothered by the smoke, they have to put the fire out. Call the Fire Department if you're in that situation." The Board then held a discussion with the resident…
