Mining Update

The Town of Marshall appears to be moving in the direction of banning mines in agricultural districts.

At a special meeting last week, the Marshall Town Board decided to begin amending the town law to ban further mining in ag districts. The move stems from concerned and upset residents near the proposed mine on Shanley Road that would include blasting. They have asked the board to restrict property owner Eric Schachtler from blasting and turning the area into a mine.

Board members said it will take several weeks, even months, to properly amend the law. In the meantime, the board put a moratorium on all new mining in the town for at least 60 days.

The full story is in this week's edition of the newspaper.
