Indians Stop Mounties 52-41

The Waterville boys varsity basketball team earned their third win in their last four games with a 52-41 home win over Little Falls last week.

The first quarter was an indication of the defensive battle the two teams were in as WCS escaped with a two-point first quarter lead at 7-5. Nate Johnson scored five points in leading Waterville through the first quarter and Cole Pearsall added a bucket.

Neither team found much scoring for the final few minutes of the first quarter, but both offenses found rhythm going in the second.

Little Falls had the first chance to score after taking possession but missed two free throws. Pearsall grabbed the rebound, which led to an empty trip for Waterville on a 1 and 1.

Another 1 and 1 chance saw the first free throw miss and finally Connor Marriott scored with a layup to extend the lead. Little Falls answered with a layup before Marriott made two layups on two straight trips to push the lead to 13-7.

Marriott's second layup was set up by a full-court assist from Pearsall, whose lead pass was too far for the trailing defense but not too far for Marriott to gather it and finish the fast break.

Good defense from Darren Johnson forced another Little Falls miss and Johnson took the mid-range shot at the other end, getting an assist for Gabe Williams with the make.

Johnson picked up a defensive rebound on the next Little Falls possession, but the next point was scored when Little Falls made the second of two free throws after a shooting foul. Little Falls then made both shots of a 1 and 1 to get the game to 15-10 for Waterville.
