Clinton Girls Beat Bulldogs


The Clinton girls varsity basketball team got their first win of the season last Saturday with a 41-32 win over Westmoreland.

It was a vicious defensive battle through the first quarter as both teams are still finding their offensive rhythms, but the defenses were already in mid-season form. The first quarter ended with Clinton leading 8-2.

The opening tipoff led to an eight-second scramble that ultimately led to a jump ball call. Since neither team established possession, the refs just did another tip-off.

Ella Morse scored the first basket for Clinton on a layup after a Gianna Trunfio steal. Another steal by Mariah Seward set up Elizabeth Wratten's basket.

Sydney Evans made a shot and Morse sank two free throws for Clinton's seventh and eighth points of the quarter. Clinton's defense was swarming and aggressive. Seward disrupted Westmoreland possessions time and again. She was eventually solved, temporarily, after taking a nasty hit fighting for a rebound.

Trunfio had at least three steals in the quarter, as did Seward, who collected another one in the first after…
