Clinton and Waterville Meet In Season-Opener


Waterville and Clinton boys varsity basketball teams met in the season-opener for both squads last week.

It was as a good a game as expected from two quality teams. Waterville held a comfortable lead through most of the game, but a tremendous rally from Clinton in the fourth quarter meant the game came down to the final second.

A 3-pointer as time was running out lifted the Indians to a 59-56 win.

Gabe Williams started off the scoring with a corner three for Waterville. Clinton's Tanner Deveans responded with a layup before making a free throw on the following possession.

Waterville’s Darren Johnson finished an And-1 layup and the free throw off an assist from Cole Pearsall. Noah King answered for Clinton with a runner before Deveans made another free throw to tie the game at six.

Johnson hit a jumper before Tyson Maxam got a quick steal and layup. Maxam then hit a three on the next possession off a pass from Connor Marriott before Marriott hit a 3-pointer off an assist from Maxam.

The Warriors’ Josh Wilcox stopped the run with a jumper before Deveans finished a fast break for two points. Maxam responded with a 3-pointer to end the quarter with Waterville up 19-10.
