Town Land Still In Controversy

Despite an updated property survey that says the Town of Brookfield owns property between the Town Hall and a private business, the area continues to be used by the business.

At last week’s Brookfield Town Board meeting, discussion came up about the property between the Town Hall and the bar next door owned by Frank Kabana. Last year the town paid for a property survey that shows the town owns the land.

Because it is town property, it cannot be used by bar owners and patrons for parking, or for the picnic tables Kabana had put out there.

The town bought concrete blocks to prevent use of the property, but board members said Kabana parked his truck there that day and the blocks could not be placed.

In addition, a plan to put up a fence also was aborted when vehicles blocked the area, said Supervisor John Salka. “We had to turn back the fence company because the cones we had placed there were moved and a vehicle was parked there.’’

Council members said the situation, which has gone on for years, needs to end. Salka said law enforcement has recommended having the vehicles towed.
