Clinton author Zach Lewis shows the changes in the Clinton and Kirkland communities in his book Past & Present, Clinton and Kirkland.
Lewis, who writes and takes photos for the Waterville Times, used his photography skills in showing the changes in the area over the decades.
Taking a historic photograph - most found in the archives of the Clinton Historical Society - Lewis found the spot where the photo was taken.
He then took a photo for the book from the same place.
Lewis’ book was released this summer and is available for purchase at the Clinton Historical Society and Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com.
Kirkland/Clinton historian Richard Williams provides a foreward to the 170 images in color and black and white.
On each page of then and now photos is some history of the location.
Lewis said his love of local history began as a boy, listening to the stories told by his grandfather, Carl Christ.
“There are about four reasons why I wanted to write this history and photography book about Clinton and Kirkland,’’ Lewis said.
“My family has lived in Clinton and Kirkland for generations. Growing up, my grandfather told me stories about Clinton from many years before my time. He’d also often talk about his family’s ice delivery business and his dairy delivery business,’’ Lewis said.
He joined the Clinton Historical Society to learn more about Clinton.
In 2015, when the Times began covering the Clinton-Kirkland area, Lewis joined the staff to help with coverage.
“It was an opportunity to write stories that document the continued histories of Clinton and Kirkland.’’
In his spare time when not working at WKTV, Lewis also teaches.
“I teach English as a Second Language, and for nearly 15 years, I taught newcomers to the country.’’
Lewis said his book is perfect for an afternoon reading session.
“If you know someone who is homesick for Clinton, it’s the perfect size to easily send a copy,” he said.
