The Gift Of Volunteers

Christmas comes early to two longtime volunteers at LutheranCare in Clinton.

Judy Stanek starts in August to plan out how to buy gifts for residents. Anna Welker gets the word out in early fall for relatives and friends to order poinsettias for residents; she needs time to write out the message each flower brings.

Both women spend time each week at the Clinton healthcare facility as two of the longer serving volunteers among the 60 or so active ones. “They are a gift every day,’’ said Karen Ostinett, director of funds and volunteer development. She too started her time at LutheranCare as a volunteer. “We’d be so lost without them.’’

Both women said it was a combination of faith-based service through their Lutheran churches and a legacy passed on from their families to help others that motivates them to volunteer their time. Welker and her late husband, Frank, passed that belief to their five daughters, and Deb Mills now joins her mother as a regular volunteer.
