While the Indians beat the Blue Devils 65-28 as 10 players scored - including five in their first varsity game - the one win adds to a legacy and what will be history later in the season. Larry Stockwell, coaching his 37th team, stands at 490 wins and will join only two other Section Three girls basketball coaches who have ever reached 500 wins with 10 more victories.
As the Indians took first a 13-5 first-quarter lead and then 33-14 at the half, Stockwell kept the bench on alert as he moved players on and off the court to give everyone playing time.
Paige Cornish drove in for a layup off the glass. Laney Hinman’s free throw opened a short run, that included another free throw for her and baskets by Sydney Hajdasz and Natalee Collins.
After the visitors scored, Collins, the team’s only freshman, put back a second-effort shot. Then the team’s only senior, Brianne Barnes, first made a basket herself then set up one for Hajdasz by getting a rebound and then making the pass for the assist to end the first half.
