Indians Lose Title, But Season Continues


Waterville football's chase for its first Section Three title came up short last Saturday in Syracuse as Frankfort-Schuyler handed Waterville their third loss of the season in the Sectional final 22-6.

The Indians. 7-3, start a second quest to return to the Carrier Dome as they, and all Section Three football runners-up this year, were given at-large spots in the state playoffs. Waterville heads south to Mahopec High School Friday to play Section One winner Tuckahoe for their first time ever in the state tournament.

In Syracuse last weekend, in front of a large Waterville crowd, the Indians faced the Knights for the second time this season. In their earlier matchup, which closed out the regular season, Waterville won 20-0.

The Indians, who have never won a sectional title in football, returned to the title game after 15 years, when they lost the Class C title to General Brown 43-14 in the only time they reached the finals. In 1980 the Indians reached the Class C semifinals.
