Japanese Culture

For the past few years, third graders at Memorial Park School in Waterville have had Chikako Ikeguchi, who lived in Japan as a child, as a guest speaker during their unit on Japan. She married a man from the United States who was stationed in Japan. She and her husband moved to the Hubbardsville and her son attended Waterville. She meets with each third grade class and talks with them about school in Japan, the language of Japan, and teaches students how to write their names in Japanese. Also as part of the unit, students made paper cranes to send to the Hiroshima Peace Park and read a story about their symbolism in Japan.

The full story is in this week's edition of the newspaper.
