A trail system within the Town of Kirkland might soon be a reality.
Sandy Schofield, Oneida County Legislator Chad Davis, and several other members of the Kirkland Trail Group addressed the Kirkland Town Board May 14 with an informative and detailed look at the proposal for the trails. They are advocating a safe place to walk, bike and run within the town, with those trails ultimately leading to others in nearby municipalities.
There are numerous benefits to having a trail system beyond simple recreation, it was noted, including the health, economic and educational offerings those trails would bring.
Davis explained they would need the town to agree to be the sponsor of the trail system, and that easements would be necessary from any property owners. “We believe there is enough excitement about this that it will happen,” Davis said.
Kirkland town Supervisor Bob Meelan complimented their thorough presentation. He said town Attorney Tony Hallak would look through the proposal, but there were no problems anticipated in moving forward on the trail plan.
“I’m sure you are going to get a vote of approval at our next meeting,” Meelan said.
